Four years have passed since the events described in the film «No way home». Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of the people he loves. Fighting crime in a New York City that no longer knows his name, he has dedicated himself entirely to protecting his city as a full-time Spider-Man. However, as the demands placed upon him grow, the pressure triggers a surprising physical evolution that threatens his very existence, at the exact moment a strange new crime pattern gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.
Spider-Man brand new day: The plot
Destin Daniel Cretton directs the next installment in the Spider-Man series. This time around, we have a film filled with visual and special effects, just as impressive as in the previous entries, along with plenty of humor blended with rich action and spiritual explorations that take us to another level. Comparisons are inevitable, and audiences will rightly debate what was done in the previous films versus what was omitted here, or what they are seeing for the first time. Our hero is more human and more vulnerable, bringing him closer to everyday people and naturally prompting viewer identification.
However, what we actually witness is a repetition of the exact same effects, which creates a sense of oversaturation and inevitably invites laughter. Frequently, these sequences feel like effects designed strictly for children. The Spider-Man mythos loses its prestige, turning into something akin to a clown that brings laughs and entertainment, but fails to evoke deeper reflection, unlike the more serious clowns we have seen in cinema.

In other words, our Parker entertains us, but he doesn’t make us think. He presents a human superhero without actually elevating him. He fails to add narrative weight to this superhero’s story. He retains the concept of the messiah, just like in all the other superhero franchises, making a passing hint at everyone’s participation in what is about to happen, but never actually developing it, doing so would shatter the traditional superhero framework. It entertains, but it provides nothing further.
New York City still heroizes and deifies Spider-Man; thus, we still lack the public’s active contribution toward the one who is supposed to save them, no matter what happens. This is where identification ends: Spider-Man cannot be you or me; he can only be the good officer, the ruler, or the emissary of a higher power. The ruling system relies on this hidden utopia, whereas we, the audience, are left reinforcing the idea that we cannot take our own fates into our own hands.
Spider-Man brand new day: After viewing
Don’t worry, you will be entertained, you will feel like superheroes for a little while, and then you’ll go out for a drink afterward, perhaps believing you are a hero to your friend or your partner. But you won’t be. You might wish we had a Spider-Man here in Greece to set things straight in the absence of political will. You might feel you’re right, but ultimately, you’ll be proven wrong once again. The effect is nice, but let’s move past it.
