Theatre reviews

In this section of the site you will find theatre reviews—both Greek and international—of productions staged on Greek theatre stages. We have watched these performances and aim to analyze them so that the viewer gains an interpretive influence, enabling them to approach the text of the performance.

We understand that a theatrical production is a system of codes that together form a text, in the semiotic sense of the term. We also know that the use and placement of elements relate to symbolic structures found in mythologies—religious, folk, or archetypal. These, along with the distinctive characteristics of each production, will be identified and analyzed in our theatre reviews. Essentially, each review will include a structural analysis of the theatrical work.

To this, we will add the expressive means: the actors’ movements and speech, the director’s choices, the scenic elements, as they appear in each performance. We recognize that different productions of the same play may create entirely different texts and aesthetic worlds; consequently, our reviews will differ in one or more aspects.

We hold deep respect for the work of the director, the technical crew, and the actors of any production. We see in them the labor of a collective artistic effort, an offering of their inner selves. We also respect the audience, who dedicate their time to attend a performance. This is why we want our theatre reviews to be thorough and free of polemical tone, aiming instead to offer a proposed way of reading.

We invite you to read our theatre reviews and to feel free to express your disagreements, which you may share in the comments section found below each review.
